Midsummer

Midsummer's Day : the Summer Solstice
The word "solstice" comes from the Latin "sol" meaning sun and "stice" to stand still. Midsummer's day - June 21st - marks the summer solstice, the day when the sun reaches its northernmost point and stops before beginning its journey back to the south of the equator. The sun reaches its highest point in the sky and Midsummer's Day is the longest day of the year. Midsummer Magic. People thought that midsummer was a time of magic and wonder-working. Evil spirits were said to appear, and people gathered herbs and flowers to protect themselves. One of the most powerful was the plant known as 'chase-devil', which we now call St John's Wort. People used it in potions, and wove the flowers into garlands to decorate their houses or protect their farm animals.

Short Story

Paper #1 A Parallel/Analysis of our short stories and Catcher in the Rye

Your first story, "Shadowing Holden", explored a particular incident in your life that was revealed in a short story. Some of the themes in your story were apparent and your group members pointed a few others out to you. Elaborate on the main issues involved in your story and then make connections and comparisons to Holden's attitude and behaviors or to his view of life in Catcher in the Rye. Use your short story as a starting point or a second point and write an explanation of how this story connects with Holden' life using textual reference to support your ideas and feelings, his point of view and attitude toward people and the outside world in general. Compare it to your view of life, or how it reflects and reveals who you are, or emphasize what you have learned.

Suggestions:

1. Start by introducing and focusing on the main issues in your story and then elaborate and show the connections to the book.

2. Start by looking at the main themes in Catcher elaborate on how it is significant in the book. Use references to show where they occur in Catcher and then introduce your short story and life and how it parallels the story.

3. Example: If your story relates an experience very dissimilar to Holden's find a connection through the emotions involved iPaper #1 A Parallel/Analysis of our short stories and Catcher in the Rye

3. Example: If your story relates an experience very dissimilar to Holden's find a connection through the emotions involved in the incident or the characters involved or perhaps how it impacts your life.

4. Your short story chronicles a risky situation that you experienced and that you learned a lesson. Is there a situation that Holden learned the same thing or was caught doing something risky?

5. You learned something from a sports incident. Were there characters involved that you judged too quickly, was your attitude suspect or did you display negative behavior that mimics Holden.

6. Finally, what is your final analysis of this situation? Did you learn anything about life or people or how to approach a problem with a different attitude or philosophical mantra?

7. There are many ways to approach this paper. You might want to start with what you learned from the whole issue and backtrack to how you came to this brilliant conclusion.

Assignment : Shadowing Holden

Shadowing Holden
 1 1/2 to 2 pages long.
 Begin or incorporate the lines that Holden uses.
 Chose a simple incident that mimics an episode that Holden encounters. It might make you laugh, cry, cringe, irritated, but it made you think about what happened or it changed your view of life and people.

 Laptops: Brainstorm 3 incidents:
 Which 2 have more substance. You have revisited the incident often and talked about it with someone else. It is simple and will convert easily into a story with dialogue. It will be interesting for others to hear about it.
 Now choose the one that has something to learn or a moral to the story. Something that you learned to do or not to do again.

 Discuss which one will work, with your partner or seatmate and then start writing.
 Is it fairly easy to illustrate in Comic Life?
Remember that you will be sharing this incident with the class so change the names and setting and make it clear and expressive with settings, dialogue, etc.

Email me the final idea that you have.

cshigemitsu@punahou.edu : Time of your class and your final idea in a short paragraph. 11:30,

Final soccer game of the season. . . .joking, name calling. . .a fight ends the season.

Save all work in Notetaker or the journal of your choice. I may ask for it in the future.

Where can you get images for your comic strip?

Holden's Madman Days

Holden’s Madman Days
 When Were Holden's Madman Days?

 Most Likely: December 1949

 The madman days were right before the Christmas holidays, so it is December.
 But what year?Holden was 16 during his madman days (p. 9). He turned 17 by the time he writes the story, which is sometime before the next September (p. 1, 9, 214). This means that he had a birthday as early as January (or even late December) and before September.Jan July Sept Dec-------------------------------------------|========birthday===========| We also know that when his brother Allie died, on 18 July 1946, Holden was 13 (p. 38). Therefore, Holden was 16 on 18 July 1949: exactly three years after Allie's death.

 But is he still 16 when December 1949 rolls around, or has he turned 17 by then (sometime before September), making the story take place the previous December (1948)?Since there is twice as much time between January (late December) and July than there is between July and September, it's more likely his birthday is between January/late December and July. This means that Holden's madman days were most likely in December of 1949.(The Catcher in the Rye was published in 1951.)
